Abstract

The results of a pioneer survey on the River Tavares Mangrove diatom flora are presented. The Tavares River draims to the South Bay in Santa Catarina Island, Santa Catarina State, Brasil. The analysis of 27 samples from 9 collect stations allowed the identification 135 taxa distributed in 37 genus, 122 species and 20 varieties. Fourteen taxa are first cited for Santa Catarina State. Fifty two taxa are polihalobe, 65 mesohalobe and 21 are oligohalobe. This survey is comparable to others previously done in the·mangroves ofthe Santa Catarina Island mangroves indicating that 55 taxa are common to alI mangroves and 20 taxa are reported for the mangroves in the region. Description, citation of the first description work, basonimous, literature used in the identification, size limits, citation for the Santa Catarina State and comments are provided for each taxon. An artificial analytical key was elaborate for identification of genera and for infra-generic taxa for the genera with more than one taxon. Maps of the studied area, photomicrographs or draws of the identified taxa and tables are also provided.
