Abstract

The Correio Braziliense, from Hipólito da Costa, was the first periodic to defend the ideas of Enlightenment and liberalism at Brazil. Its monthly forty pages antecipated a very important pattern of journalism, structured both with financial aims and critical vision of Portuguese absolutism. It prepared Brazilian readers to assume effective participation on the political public sphere and its constitutional form.
