Author Guidelines

Articles submitted to Estudos em Jornalismo e Mídia must be original and may not be and/or remain under submission to any other journal during the editorial process. Authors must ensure that the article falls within the journal’s focus and scope and that they are aware of the peer review policies and the ethics and good publication practices policies.

Manuscripts may be submitted in Portuguese, Spanish, and English. After acceptance of articles written in Portuguese, the journal invites authors to translate the text into English, with translation costs being the sole responsibility of the authors. The translated version of the article will only be published upon submission of a statement from a professional reviewer or translator.

Authors with accepted articles may be invited to act as reviewers for the journal, thus contributing to the peer review process.

The same person may have a maximum of one article published per year in Estudos em Jornalismo e Mídia. This rule applies regardless of the authorship position in the articles.

At least one of the authors must hold a doctoral degree if the submission is intended for the articles section.

Papers previously published in conference proceedings are not accepted.

Citations and references

Citations and references must comply with the standards of the Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas (ABNT). Articles submitted following other standards will be rejected.

All cited works must be referenced, and all works listed in the references must be cited in the body of the text, indicating the correct correspondence between the parts.

For citations, NBR 10520/2023 must be followed, using the author-date format, including the author’s surname and the publication date in the body of the text, with page identification when applicable. Indirect citations do not require indication of the consulted pages.

Avoid the use of citation of citation (apud). Do not use source indications in footnotes or endnotes. Only sources cited in the text must appear in the reference list.

For the reference list, follow NBR 6023/2025. Include in the reference list only works cited in the body of the text.

The reference list must be presented at the end of the article, organized in alphabetical order, in single spacing, left-aligned, and with one blank line between each reference.

Do not use underlining (______) to replace authors’ names, nor the symbols < > to indicate links.

When the cited source has a DOI (Digital Object Identifier), it must be included in the reference.

Examples of citations and references are available in the journal templates, but they do not replace consultation of the full ABNT standards.

Articles

Texts resulting from completed research or research at advanced stages of development, highlighting the theoretical-methodological foundations, procedures employed, and analyses of the results achieved.

Articles presenting critical analyses of issues related to journalism and its relationships with society, the market, and academia will be welcomed, as well as matters related to information, media communication processes, and technological, cultural, and social innovations.

EJM prioritizes the publication of articles that offer original theoretical approaches or new frameworks, as well as texts supported by updated, unpublished empirical data that contribute to scientific advances in the field.

Interviews

Texts resulting from the collection of statements for publication, based on concrete case studies and comments of interest, conducted with prominent figures in research, thought, and journalistic practice, seeking to contribute to dialogue in the field and to document experiences.

Interviews must have been conducted within a maximum period of one year in order to preserve the originality of the statements and their contextual relevance.

Book Reviews

Unpublished texts containing critical and analytical commentary on relevant works in the fields of journalism and communication published within the last two years. Book reviews submitted to the journal must provide comprehensive and in-depth readings of the works and situate the books within broader contexts of academic debate. Reviews are also expected to emphasize relevant theoretical as well as methodological aspects presented in the commented texts.

Book reviews consisting exclusively of book summaries are not accepted.

Translations

Portuguese versions of relevant and foundational texts in the field of journalism, written by renowned authors and still unpublished in Brazil. The texts to be translated must provide unequivocal contributions to journalism studies, whether conceptual, practical, reflective, methodological, or ethical. Translations must be accompanied by contextual notes and must be formally authorized by their original authors, publishers, or copyright holders.
