Homicides journalistic coverage criticism in Diário Catarinense from the social class provisions

This paper consists in a synthesis of a master’s thesis, which had studied the journalistic treatment of homicides published by Diário Catarinense, a newspaper broadcasted in Santa Catarina state, in Brazil. The research goal is to identify, describe and criticize the social class arrangements presented in the media coverage of homicides, based on Jessé Souza (2003, 2009 and 2010) social class concept. The investigation period selected intentional violent deaths reported by the newspaper in the first half of 2017 in Florianópolis/SC, observing the treatment differences in each homicide news published. It shows our social structure crossings. The hypothesis is that social class provisions influence journalistic treatment of homicides and reinforce popular class contempt.
