Abstract

This article aims to understand the phenomenon of chronic unemployment during the period of the structural crisis of capital, without losing sight of the material foundations of this phenomenon. It was found that the root of unemployment lies in the very dynamics of the expanded accumulation of capital, as it increases the magnitude of constant capital and reduces that of variable capital in motion, through the rise in labor productivity. This, in turn, generates a relative surplus population. Therefore, although unemployment is not exclusive to contemporary capitalism, from the perspective of István Mészáros, it is observed that it became chronic with the convergence of the structural crisis of capital.
