Abstract

The objective of this paper is to describe the challenges posed to research and postgraduate studies in Social Work by emphasizing the relevance of research and production of knowledge in this field of study and intervention. It promotes such discussion by considering the act of researching as an absolute act of freedom and the fight for freedom as a symbol in the history of mankind, in a permanent quest for emancipation. It takes into account the first five national plans for graduate studies in order to identify needs and trends in graduate studies in Brazil and further characterize graduate studies in Social Work in this context. The method in use was

bibliographic and documental research with a historical and qualitative approach. The contribution to theoretical research applied to Social Service, in the context of graduate studies, highlights aspects relative to history, meaning and consolidation of this area as a field
of study, education and intervention.
