This article presents current debates regarding the presence of young people in the public domain. There is a wealth of discussion and perplexity regarding how young people choose to get active in the public domain that originates by the distinct use of the term “political” in academic and policy debates. When youth participation is understood to mean involvement in representative politics then it is employed an understanding of youth as apathetic. When the term is widened to include a number of activities in the local and informal domains of social life, then young people are seen as creators of novel ways of involvement. This article will analyse these debates and will argue that rather than been a clear process, youth participation can be better understood when it is contextualised within everyday lived experience.
