Due to changes in the labor market and new configurations of modern society, it has become necessary to investigate the social relations of obese people in order to understand precisely the extent of discrimination and prejudice this population suffers. Being overweight is a major health problem in the country today, affecting 10-40% of the population. The high levels of obesity show this is an important public health issue, which requires study of the degrees of discrimination, prejudice, and protection in relation to obese individuals. The article considers obesity as a social problem, and presents the partial results of a study that analyses the media as a instrument of production of a model body and concepts of disease. Finally, the text points out the contribution of Social Work to this social issue.Downloads
