Written by Marx and Engels between 1845 and 1846, The German Ideology aimed to settle accounts with hegelian idealist philosophy, including in this settlement its neo-hegelian version and the contemplative materialism of Ludwig Feuerbach. This is the writing in which, for the first time in the history of philosophy, the pillars of historical materialism were explained. In light of reflections around the work in question, the article seeks to bring elements that explain the peculiarity of the materialist conception of the social being established by the pair of German thinkers. To this end, support is sought in the economic-philosophical Manuscripts of 1844, in the General Introduction of 1857, and in the arguments of commentators such as György Lukács, José Chasin and Ronaldo Vielmi, aiming to demonstrate that The German Ideology marks the decisive overcoming of Marx and Engels of Hegelian idealism, as well as idealist philosophy in general, inaugurating a new point of view based on social humanity.
