This essay, originally presented as a conference at the 5th Symposium on Reading, Reflections and Dialogues (Simler) and the 1st National Congress on Reading (Conler), at the Federal University of Piauí, in Brazil, reflects on reading (and reader education) and writing in contemporary times. It draws on the ideas and provocations of authors such as Franco Berardi, Roberto Casati, and others who address technology and the future, in dialogue with Brazilian scholars such as Magda Soares and Angela Kleiman, known for their work on literacies, as well as the proposals of the New London Group since the 1990s, particularly their expanded notion of multiliteracies. By anticipating certain dilemmas and fostering debate about an intelligent and emancipated future involving reading, writing, and schooling, this essay advocates for an insubordinate pedagogy in a world filled with technosemiotic traps from which we may still be able to steer away.
