The Worker’s Party under a sartorian perspective: from an antisystem party to a legitimating of the system.

Abstract

Under a sartorian perspective, this article characterizes the Brazilian Workers’ Party (PT) like an anti-system party through an analysis of three cases in which the party’s objective was to cause a symbolic impact that could un-legitimize the Brazilian political system. Using the Panebianco’s theoretical model, we try to explain how the PT processed the institutional changes that made the party leave gradually his anti-systemic character: this enabled its progressive distancing of a left-wing isolation and the approach of the center-right political forces during the presidential electoral campaign in 2002. We nominated this migration toward the center of the national political spectrum by dislocation variable, essential for the conquest of the Presidency in 2002 by the party’s candidate.

Possui graduação em Administração pela Universidade de São Paulo (2001) e mestrado em Ciências Sociais pela Universidade Federal de São Carlos (2004 - bolsista CAPES). Atualmente é doutorando em Ciência Política na Universidade Federal de São Carlos (bolsa CNPq), com período de doutorado-sanduíche na Universidade de Salamanca / Instituto de Estudos de Iberoamérica e Portugal (bolsa PDEE-CAPES). Na UFSCar, participa do Grupo de Pesquisa "Comunicação Política, Partidos e Eleições" (CNPq), atuando na linha de pesquisa "Partidos e Eleições". Realiza suas investigações nas áreas de Partidos Políticos e Estudos Eleitorais. Palavras-chave: organizações partidárias, Partido dos Trabalhadores, estudos eleitorais, estudos legislativos.
