Science and politics in the public hearings of Brazilian Forest Code

Abstract

The article discusses, from the perspective of Social Studies of Science and Technology, the demarcation of science and non-science (boundary work) applied as political resource in the processes of decision-making. As an object of analysis are tackled public hearings held by Brazilian Congress to discuss the reformulation of the Forest Code. Are investigated the speeches of members of the "bancada ruralista" (brazilian rural entourage) and Embrapa researchers who participated in the hearings. Finally, we suggest questions about the application of scientific knowledge as information in the decision-making process.

Jean Carlos Hochsprung Miguel, Universidade Estadual de Campinas UNICAMP. Doutorando no Departamento de Política Científica e Tecnológica

Possui graduação em Ciências Sociais pela Fundação Universidade Regional de Blumenau (2009), pós-graduação em metodologia do ensino em História e Geografia pelo Instituto Catarinense de Pós-graduação (ICPG) - Blumenau (2008) e mestrado em Política Científica e Tecnológica pela Universidade Estadual de Campinas (2013). Atualmente é doutorando em Política Científica e Tecnológica no instituto de Geociências da Unicamp. Tem experiência na área de Sociologia, com ênfase em Sociologia do Conhecimento Científico, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: ciência, tecnologia e sociedade; expertise e formulação de políticas públicas; pesquisa e desenvolvimento de geotecnologias (mudanças climáticas)
