About the Journal

Focus and Scope

"Principia: an international journal of epistemology" was founded in 1997 and regularly publishes articles, discussions and book reviews. The journal aims at publishing original scholarly work on epistemology, broadly conceived including theory of knowledge, philosophy of science, philosophy of language, philosophy of mind, philosophy of logic, metaphysics, and other related topics, with an emphasis on the analytic approach and on the Modern and Contemporary periods. Papers can be submitted in English, Portuguese or Spanish.

Peer Review Process

Papers submitted to the journal Principia are first evaluated by the Editorial Team. This first stage takes usually between one and three months. If judged appropriate to the scope of the journal, papers will be sent to two referees in the double-blind peer-review system. If a paper receives contradictory recommendations, it shall be subjected to a third reviewer.

Based on the reviewers’ reports, the Editorial Board of Principia takes a first editorial decision, which might be one of the following: (a) “Accept submission”: the paper is ready for publication (proofreading might still be required); (b) “Revisions required”: the paper needs to undergo some non-substantial changes and a new version will be subjected to a new evaluation by the Editorial Team; (c) “Resubmit for review”: the paper needs to undergo substantial changes and a new version will be sent once again to the reviewers; (d) “Decline submission”: the paper is not fit to be published in Principia.

In cases (b) and (c) a 6 to 8 weeks deadline will be given for the authors to present a new, improved version of their papers; after this deadline, submissions will be archived and considered declined.

The first editorial decision normally takes between eight and ten months after the initial submission.
