Based on a particular case: the fight for land in an agrarian context, in Rio das Reis (Bom Jesus da Lapa, Bahia (Brazil), 1977- 1995), the following article analyses the changes that happened in the conflict from the moment on when the social agents involved started to embody an ethnic idiom. Looking for a comprehension of how the ethnic identification process works, it develops the hypothesis that the political rituals performed in Brasilia, as away of pressure, are structural arrangements of a narrative that is building a positive community identity ofAfro-Brazili an people and "quilombo remainders".
