This paper intents to find out how the German ethnic issue is rooted in the Lutheran faith and how, for its part, Lutheranism is rooted in the notion of Germanity for surviving in an adverse cultural context. It points out howLutheranism and Germanity have collided with the Luso- Brasilian Catholicism and with the Catholicism of other immigrants with was Romanized, with
a strong Tridentine inspiration. Lutherans and Catholics understood that the survival and strengthening oftheir faith dependent on good schooling. Thus, it was in the educational field that most of the tensions arose since they struggled for the same "customers".
