In this article, we discuss the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on the development of readers through storytelling during remote learning, focusing on the challenges and possibilities encountered by two elementary school teachers at a public school in Pau dos Ferros, Rio Grande do Norte. The research is qualitative, field-based, and uses questionnaires and group interviews as data collection techniques. It uses a theoretical foundation based on authors such as Alves (2020); Amarilha (2012); Busatto (2012; 2013); Bezerra (2020), among others, who discuss technologies and storytelling, their characteristics, and contributions to the development of a taste for reading. The results indicate that, despite the challenges, storytelling and reading mediation were creatively adapted to train readers, awakening their pleasure in the fabulous universe of literature. Furthermore, the data point to the importance of the teacher's role as a mediator, given that during remote teaching, teachers acted as facilitators of students' encounters with stories through different techniques and digital resources. We conclude that, based on the reading practices developed in the remote context, there is a need to invest in new public policies that provide greater support and technical and humanized preparation to meet the technological and pedagogical demands that permeate teaching.
