This article presents two experiments using DLNotes, a tool for taking digital notes in texts, carried out with college students. Based on the notes taken by two classes in the Master’s Program in Portuguese Teaching at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of the University of Coimbra during the 2025–2026 academic year, this study provides a quantitative and qualitative analysis of these students’ reading process when encountering literary texts, particularly regarding the use of metacognitive strategies. In this way, it is possible to formulate pedagogical recommendations for the study of literature in the classroom, highlighting the advantages of this digital resource for both students and teachers. Following a brief reflection on the challenges that reading poses for students in the 21st century, the first part of the article will describe the methodology adopted. The first experiment was based on free annotations, involving five students from the Portuguese Seminar I course in the 1st Semester of the 2nd year. The second experiment focused on the evaluation — now expanded to include three additional students — of the use of metacognitive strategies, through the study of semantic annotations made by the Portuguese Seminar II class, in the 2nd Semester of the 2nd year of the same program. The second part of the article focuses on the statistical analysis of the data obtained from both experiments and their contributions to the approach to literary texts.
