Technology and spiritual knowledge in “The Midnight Gospel” – digital hyperabstraction and imagination

If logocentric reason reaches its maximum degree of abstraction with the development of online communications on digital media (Kamper, 2016; Han, 2018; Berardi, 2020), it is possible to explore, within this incorporeal abstractionism, the infinite possibilities of the imagination, it also a hyperabtraction of the mind. The animated series The Midnight Gospel (Netflix, 2020) will be analyzed here in order to explore creative possibilities technically supported by digital graphics and sound performance. We will deal with the narrative layers, affective bonds and spiritual discourses that animate virtual reality. Paying particular attention to the series’ framed narrative, we will show that the figure of Clancy presents himself as an avatar of the new “spirit of the time”, the spirit of that time which everything indicates that we are on the verge of collapse. We will conclude that the somewhat childish character created by Ward and Trussell is wiser that it seems at first glance, in reality, he is a magician.
