Null Subject in Brazilian private letters from the 19th to the 20th centuries: new data for an old change

The syntax of Brazilian Portuguese (BP), specifically as for the resetting of the Null Subject Parameter (NSP), has been studied extensively both in Brazil and abroad, from a strictly theoretical perspective (with intuition data) to a more empiricist perspective, with data from oral and written samples. The null subject in BP has more constraints for its interpretation and licensing that in EP or other Romance Null Subject Languages. This paper presents a diachronic analysis of the null subject of definite reference in a sample of private letters written by Brazilians born throughout the 19th and the 20th centuries. The methodology of this research combines the theoretical assumptions of generative grammar with the methodology of statistical data analysis from Sociolinguistics, considering that language change occurs during the period of language acquisition, and that the gradualness that we see in the texts occurs in the replacement of a new grammar for another. The frequency of usage, in this way, will reflect the competition between different grammar until the new grammar replaces the older one. The results reveal that the overall null subject rates go from 68% to 31%. Furthermore, the syntactic contexts of the null subject in letters written in the first half of the 19th century are broader than the contexts of the null subject in the letters of the second half of the 20th century.
