Linguistic maintenance and the variable ‘degree of rurality’ in focus
a methodological instrument for the analysis of rural linguistic phenomena

This investigation focuses on linguistic maintenance based on the quantitative and qualitative description of the variable phenomenon of vowel alternation preceding the PN suffix /mos/, in regular verbs of the 1st and 2nd conjugation, in canonical forms, as we speak and learn, and not canonical, how we speak and learn, as well as its relationship with rurality and linguistic conservatism. This is research within the scope of the Theory of Variation and Change (cf, Labov, 2008 [1972], 1982, 1994; Weinreich, Labov, Herzog, 2006 [1968]; Guy, 1981, 2000), Dialectology (Vasconcelos, 1901; Boléo, 1943; Melo, 1946) and Historical Linguistics (Castilho, 1968, 1992, 2016). We take as a basis the defense of Naro and Scherre (2003) that rural areas constitute “islands of linguistic conservatism” by maintaining uses of a less recent Portuguese (from the 19th and 20th centuries, considered by dialectologists as “modern Portuguese”). Our sample is made up of 168 sociolinguistic interviews from the base database VARLINFE (Linguistic Variation of Slavic Speech) – linked to NEES (Center for Slavic Studies), at UNICENTRO (Irati campus), with a mostly rural characteristic. linguistic and extralinguistic, using the GOLDVARB-X multivariate analysis program to select the complex linguistic variable ‘degree of rurality’, constructed specifically for this study based on dialectological studies that mapped rural and conservative language phenomena. linguistic particularities considered rural and, for each interviewed informant, a usage scale was made, considering three degrees of rurality: low, medium and high. The results showed that the use of non-canonical variants (/e/ in “falemo” and /i/ in “aprendimo”) was significantly interrelated to the high degree of rurality of the informants, an indication that their use is more prominent in contexts of linguistic conservatism and, consequently, linguistic maintenance of conservative forms. We believe that the use of the internal independent variable ‘degree of rurality’ can help researchers work with variable rural phenomena and also with the topic that is still little explored (cf. Ribeiro and Lacerda, 2013) of linguistic maintenance.
