The use of "em face de": a study on initial petitions

The work aims to investigate the use of em face de by legal professionals taking the Petitions of the Civil Courts of Curitiba, published between 1990 and 2019 as research corpus. The motivation for the study is the observation, of the recurrent use of this expression with value of “against” in this discursive genre . These documents analyze the operation of the item from the perspective of the studies by Hopper, 1991; Hopper and Traugott, 2003; Heine and Kuteva, 2007; and Traugott, 2010, considering (i) the expansion of use of “em face de” in the perspective of grammaticalization studies, and (ii) a probable specialization of use in the legal context. From the analysis, it was concluded that the item studied underwent an effective expansion and dismantling, as well as the specialization of use in procedural parts.References
