Constructional change in predications with support verbs

The research outlined here was based on the investigation of constructional change evidence (alteration in the formal or functional pole of construction) detected in a diachronic study (recent diachrony) of verb-nominal complex predicators with the verb DAR/GIVE in Brazilian journalistic texts from the 20th and 21st centuries (1925 to 2014). Examples of these periphrases are: dar uma desacelerada, dar uma reagida, dar uma escapadela, dar uma enroladinha and dar um pulinho. We use the methodology of quantitative and qualitative analysis to observe the phenomenon. The objective is to make a formal-functional description of these constructions, observing their behavior in different synchronies throughout the specified period, paying attention to possible linguistic changes, extensions of use and/or meanings and frequency of occurrences and constructional types. We aim to verify to what extent these changes are related to intra-linguistic (co-text) and extralinguistic (context) elements. We are based on the assumption that there is a change in the functional pole of constructions with support verb under investigation, overlapping the modal value (as a politeness strategy) in detriment of the non-durable aspectual value. The theoretical framework of this research is based on explanatory constructs of Functional-Cognitive Linguistics, the Usage-Based Construction Grammar and Sociolinguistics.
