Abstract

The aim of this article is to investigate the ideological ambiguity present in the works of Fernando Pessoa, encompassing both his prose and his poetry. Ideological ambiguity arises when a word, expression or phrase incorporates various political orientations, making it difficult to precisely identify the specific ideology associated with it. Identifying his ideological position proves challenging due to the diversity of perspectives found in his writings, as Pessoa presents a variety of literary voices, expressing distinct political views, which results in an inherent ambiguity. The research focuses on Pessoa's ideology through the analysis of his political and literary texts. The selection of works addresses semantic fields related to themes such as authority, colonialism, democracy, dictatorship, imperialism, liberalism, nationalism, Salazarism and tradition. The analysis seeks to understand how these themes were treated linguistically in his literary production and to identify possible ideological ambiguities, whether explicit or implicit, concluding that it is not possible to determine precisely which ideology Fernando Pessoa identifies with.
