Abstract

Logistics maturity models (LMMs) are strategic frameworks used to assess organizational capabilities and support continuous improvement. However, existing models provide limited consideration of digital integration as a capability connecting organizational processes and supply chain actors within the Industry 4.0 context. This study addresses a significant research gap concerning the incorporation of digital transformation concepts into logistics maturity models. A systematic literature review (SLR) based on the PRISMA methodology was conducted, analyzing 92 peer-reviewed articles indexed in Scopus and Web of Science between 2018 and 2025. The study combines bibliometric techniques, including co-citation and co-word analyses, with qualitative content analysis. The findings indicate that current LMMs focus primarily on process optimization and organizational readiness, while digital integration is often treated as isolated technology adoption rather than a core maturity dimension. Four major research streams were identified: Industry 4.0 technologies, digital capabilities, data-driven decision-making, and maturity assessment. Based on these findings, a conceptual framework is proposed that positions digital integration as the central mechanism linking Industry 4.0 technologies, logistics maturity, supply chain performance, and organizational competitiveness. The study consolidates fragmented knowledge, proposes a future research agenda, and offers practical guidance for managers pursuing digital transformation initiatives.

Rodrigo Tognetti, Politecnico di Milano

Rodrigo Stockler Tognetti is a PhD researcher in Mechanical Engineering at Politecnico di Milano. He holds an MSc in Industrial Engineering from the UFSC and a BEng in Mechanical Production Engineering from University of São Paulo. He worked as a supplier development manager, operations manager in several companies and currently his research interests include industrial data analysis, and artificial intelligence for condition monitoring.

Carlos Taboada, Galileo Amazon Institute of Technology and Education

Carlos M. Taboada Rodríguez holds a PhD in Economic Engineering from Technische Universität Dresden and a degree in Industrial Engineering from the University of Havana. He is a professor at the Galileo Amazon Institute of Technology and Education and a full professor affiliated with the Graduate Program in Industrial Engineering at UFSC. His research focuses on logistics maturity, SC sustainability, and Industry 4.0 logistics.

Ricardo Chalmeta, Jaume I University

Ricardo Chalmeta holds a PhD from the Universitat Politècnica de València and is a full professor at Universitat Jaume I. He founded and leads the Integration and Systems Re-engineering Research Group and has coordinated research and industry-funded R&D projects. His research interests include enterprise integration, business intelligence, SC sustainability, and digital technologies for organizational management.

Neimar Follmann, Universidade Tecnológica Federal do Paraná

Neimar Follmann holds a PhD and an MSc in Industrial Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina and a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the Federal University of Technology – Paraná. He is an associate professor at UTFPR and his research interests include logistics maturity, performance measurement, benchmarking, logistics costs, transportation, and the Theory of Constraints.
