The Antônio Torres trilogy: expressions of Brazil in the 20th century

Abstract

This study investigates the way in which Antônio Torres, through his novels Essa Terra, O Cachorro e o Lobo and Pelo Fundo da Agulha, expresses some aspects of Brazilian society. To this end, an analysis is carried out based on the investigation of the theme in a descriptive and exploratory way, with a qualitative bibliographical review. The text is divided into sections, and we conclude, based on the verification of Torres' three books, that the author presents a reflection on the political and social invisibility of the sertão and the sertanejo, the driven diaspora and the fracture of identity resulting from the unequal progress in the country, in the 1970s and 1990s of the 20th century and early 21st century. Our analysis is based on, among others, the theories of Baudelaire (1988), Antonio Candido (2006), Bergson (1999), Joel Candau (2019), Luiz Costa Lima (2006), Maurice Halbwachs (2006) and Prado Junior (1979).
