Dossier: Brazilian Modernism 100+1 years: criticism, legacies, perspectives

Release manifest:

We, intellectuals, artists, researchers, professors, a certain “us” perhaps, one could say, what attitude should we take in the year 2022+1 in the face of the centenary of the
"Week of Modern Art"?

***

Shall we review it all, examining from different angles the different nuances of what was staged at Theatro Municipal (including backstage, pit, surroundings, halls, boos)?

Shall we criticize the terms with which the "Week" was described, in capital letters? or Modern Art? Modern enough? Modernists? Futurists? From São Paulo? Regional? International? Universals?

Shall we pass into analysis and therapy the successive revisions of the past? Decade, 20 years, fiftieth anniversary, 80 years? Was it tasty, was it beautiful? Was it adventurous, aristocratic? Critical moment or creative? Influences, anachronisms, decolonialisms?

Shall we relativize sorts of madness, popes, schools? We, the contemporary futuristic contemporaries somehow out of place in between places?

Shall we analyze identities, identifications or observe structural impossibilities (machismo, racism, homophobia)?

Shall we question the nation, in its eventual advances and progress, for what was intended as modernity, actuality and universality?

Shall we mystify the meaning of commemorating a centenary that finds a country of authoritarian legions in the saddest nation?

We invite researchers who are willing to respond to this provocation, to submit an article to outra travessia (submission guidelines).

Deadline for submission: June 1, 2023.
Extended submission deadline: June 23, 2023.
