Leadership in Project Management: a bibliometric study and literature review for understanding the field of study

Abstract

This study aims to understand the project leadership field of study. To promote this understanding it was collected scientific articles in the Web of Science database using the keywords: leadership, project and project management. 65 articles were collected and after an analysis that had as main criterion the relevance of the article to project leadership field, it was defined as 39 articles relevant to the topic. These 39 articles were analyzed and grouped by theme. As a result of this analysis it was identified in the object of study the following topics related to project leadership: Leadership Competencies versus Success in PM (9 articles), Leadership and teams in PM (11 articles), Motivational and emotional aspects of leadership in PM (3 articles), Profile, role and leadership development of the Project Manager (12 articles), leadership and strategic issues in PM (4 items). The data shows that there is an increasing trend of publications in this field of study, however, the study of the sampled field 39 in these articles does not reflect the importance of the subject for practice.
