The importance of innovation and technological progress has been widely discussed in the literature as a constitutive factor of economic growth. Parallel to this discussion it is the debate between the issues of economic-technological development and its environmental impacts. The objective of this study is to characterize the determining factors of European companies that adopt sustainable practices. In view of this, their behavior will be selected using multivariate analysis tools, namely: cluster analysis and factor analysis. Based on data from the Community Innovation Survey (CIS), released by Eurostat for the year 2014, it was possible to verify that European companies have two significant determinants of eco-innovation: government support and consumer demand. In addition, the sectors “Printing and reproduction of recorded media” and those of the manufacturing industry (“Manufacture of petroleum, chemical, pharmaceutical, rubber and plastic products”; “Manufacture of chemical products” and “Manufacture of basic and economic pharmaceutical products”) showed great efforts in favor of environmentally innovative activities.
