Writings of the Unthinkable: Figurations of the Haitian Past

Throughout this article, I propose a reflection on different figurations of the Haitian past. First, I provide a brief description of Haiti’s unthought place as a theoretical problem. Then, I select four works for a cross-analysis: The Black Jacobins (1938) by C. L. R. James, The Kingdom of This World (1949) by Alejo Carpentier, Hegel and Haiti (2005) by Susan Buck-Morss, and A Decolonial Ecology (2022) by Malcom Ferdinand. Despite their thematic diversity—ranging from Pan-Africanism to magical realism, from Hegelian dialectics to the Anthropocene—these works share an engagement with Haiti’s revolutionary past, both in the texture of their narratives and in the temporal agency they evoke. In sum, the essayistic approach adopted in this writing seeks to render flexible the different figurations of an unfinished and spectral past, one that resists oblivion and remains in continuous reopening through political and theoretical agendas.
