The idea of solidarity in the critical theory of Paul Singer

In times of crisis, solidarity re-emerges as a privileged moral and political vocabulary, but also as a contested term, often emptied or appropriated by regressive projects. This article argues that the current ambivalence of the concept stems from structural transformations of contemporary capitalism that produce a twofold desolidarization: objective (institutional dismantling, precarization, financialization) and subjective (individualization, moralization of insecurity, resentment). It is argued that a significant part of recent social philosophy, while offering important normative conceptions of solidarity, tends to underestimate its material inscription in the world of work and its dependence on alternative economic arrangements. As a contribution, the paper proposes to reconstruct Paul Singer's work as a critical theory, in the strong sense of the term, capable of articulating (i) a diagnosis of Brazilian dependent capitalism marked by structural segmentation of the labor market, functional informality, and exclusionary urbanization and (ii) an emancipatory model of solidarity anchored in the solidarity economy, understood as a practice of democratizing work and institutionally reconfiguring production. The central hypothesis is that Singer offers a political-democratic theory of solidarity: not as a mere virtue, but as an organizing principle of cooperative economic forms of life, capable of simultaneously confronting precariousness, inequality, and democratic regression.
