Under rule of others: republican domination and social hierarchy

The article analyzes the neorepublican conception of domination as a possible answer to what is morally objectionable about relationships in which we live under the power of other people. The aim of the analysis is to compare the notion of republican domination, as conceived by neorepublican theories of freedom (Skinner, Pettit, and Lovett), can deal- in a conceptually precise and normatively adequate way- with cases of social subordination (Neuhouser, Kolodny, and Anderson). The article seeks to highlight the gains that giving emphasis to unjust forms of social subordination would bring to our comprehension of cases of interpersonal governance.
