This paper presents a reflection about the central role of the media in contemporaneity, more specifically of the internet, based on the experiences of the “PET-Mídias: informação e comunicação” extension project from the Tutorial Education Program of the Languages undergraduate courses at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC), with a focus in the context of Covid-19 pandemic. Thus, a questionnaire was applied to analyze the role and relevance of PET-Mídias' actions. Finally, it was observed that in an era of virtualization of activities, which was intensified by the pandemic, extension projects of this nature contribute to the democratization of knowledge and the actions beyond the university.
