Nurse training through university extension: an experience report on the care of individuals with pressure injuries

Abstract

The objective of this study was to describe the experience of undergraduate Nursing students in an extension project aimed at training for the care of patients with wounds in Primary Health Care in Sinop-MT, Brazil. The experience included theoretical-practical training sessions, home nursing consultations, caregiver health education, and the use of technologies such as laser therapy and ozone therapy, from July 2022 to March 2023. This is a descriptive study, in the form of an experience report, which articulated teaching-service-community and highlighted the nurse’s role in the care of a bedridden elderly woman with a pressure injury. The actions were scientifically based on the guidelines of the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) and the National Pressure Injury Advisory Panel (NPUAP). Data were collected from the patient's medical record. The results demonstrated the positive impact of extension activities on academic training, professional qualification, caregiver empowerment, and the effectiveness of care for individuals with pressure injury. It is concluded that university extension constitutes a powerful strategy for academic education and for the qualification of nursing care, by articulating teaching, service and community, and contributing to favorable clinical outcomes in the care of individuals with pressure injury.
