Abstract

A rapid growth in the offer of higher education courses through distance
education has been observed in the past fifteen years in Brazil. It is increasing
among public universities due to the lack of high school teachers and in the
possibility of expanding the universities towards remote areas. In this article, we
present an overview of the public universities growth in the last fifteen years, the
implementation context of the first physics teachers´ graduation course taught by
distance education at the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) as well as the
evaluation and accomplishing work performed by the Distance Learning Research
Group named NUPA.
