About the Journal
Focus and Scope
Forum Linguístico is an academic journal launched in 1998 by the Linguistics Graduate Program of the Federal University of Santa Catarina. With a quarterly periodicity, the journal conveys debates concerning all fields from both Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. Our aim is to publish new research, be it theoretical or applied, in the field of language and language teaching. We publish the work of contributors from Brazil and abroad written in Portuguese, Spanish or English.
Forum Linguístico receives submission of articles in a continuous flow system. There are no fees for submission.
Peer Review Process
Fórum Linguístico journal counts on an Editorial Board with notorious knowledge in the fields of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. The manuscripts received which must fit the editorial line and the section polices of the magazine are selected and anonymously evaluated, firstly, by one referee regarding formal aspects, and, secondly, by two referees ad hoc, within their fields of expertise, regarding the article content. Manuscripts which don’t fit the editorial line and the journal policy, and/or the norms of presentation, will be immediately rejected by the first referee. In the process of content evaluation, manuscripts may be accepted in their entirety, with no restrictions; accepted in their entirety, with some restrictions; and rejected. On the occasion of clearly differing feedback from the two referees, with one approval and one refusal, the manuscript will be sent to a third referee.
Should approval be granted but pointing out major hindrances, the journal editors may reject such articles without further consultation to referees. Whenever there is the need to modifications concerning grammar or orthographic aspects, textualization or standard linguistic norm in order to maintain the standards of publication, the Editorial Board may make the necessary adjustments, yet respecting authors’ varying styles. Onother cases, the author must reformulate the text in accordance with whatever is solicited by the Editorial Board. Fórum Linguístico does not endorse and may not be held accountable for opinions issued in the texts published, given that the opinions in them are of full responsibility of their authors.

Ethics and best practices for publishing
The journal Fórum Linguístico follows recommendations for standards of ethics, transparency and responsibility in scientific communication shared by national and international institutions, such as the guidelines, guides and flowcharts of the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), Principles of Transparency and Best Practice in Scholarly Publishing (DOAJ, COPE, OASPA and WAME), Recommendations for Promoting Integrity in Scientific Journal Publications (CSE), among others.
The policy adopted by the journal aims to promote responsibility and integrity in the publication of scientific articles considering all people involved in the editorial process.
Authorship and contribution
Fórum Linguístico recommends that authorship be attributed to contributors who have made a substantial contribution to the article and are responsible for the work and its published form, meeting the four basic criteria for indicating authorship listed by the ICMJE:
- Substantial contributions to the conception or design of the work; or the acquisition, analysis, or interpretation of data for the work;
- Elaborate the work or review it critically for important intellectual content;
- Final approval of the version to be published;
- Agreement to be responsible for all aspects of the work, ensuring that issues relating to the accuracy or integrity of any part of the work are properly investigated and resolved.
Acknowledgements can be used to denote contributions to the work that do not meet the listed authorship criteria, but that should be recognized.
Conflicts of interest
According to the CSE, conflicts can be personal (own interests, submissions of acquaintances, competitors, etc.), financial (funding, subsidies, salaries, patents, etc.) or non-financial (academic, political, thematic, etc.).
If the publication may generate any potential conflict of interest, the authors must declare at the time of submission, mentioning any links to funding bodies, public or private institutions, as well as to the people involved.
Editors and reviewers should not participate in the editorial process of submissions in relation to which conflict of interest is established, delegating decision-making when appropriate.
Political or ideological positioning, ethnic, gender or religious diversity, as well as differences in theoretical and methodological perspectives should not influence the actions and decisions taken during the editorial process.
Data sharing and reproducibility
Fórum Linguístico encourages that, during the manuscript submission process, being legally and ethically possible, the authors deposit the data linked to the research in a reliable repository, and/or send the files as a supplementary document, authorizing their publication alongside the article.
The following can be considered research data: raw or processed data, tables, charts and statistical information not used in the article, codes, datasets, among others.
Authors should inform at the time of submission if:
- The dataset supporting the study results is not publicly available.
- The entire dataset supporting the results of the study was published in the article itself.
- The entire dataset supporting the results of the study was published in the article and in the section “supplementary materials”.
Ethical oversight
Studies that contain results of research developed in Brazil with the involvement of human beings must have the approval of a Research Ethics Committee (REC). Under the same conditions, foreign authors must have the approval of a REC or equivalent body in the country of origin of the research.
Thus, the authors of articles related to research with human beings must declare the approval of the REC and inform the number of the opinion at the time of submission to Fórum Linguístico.
Allegations of research misconduct
The journal adopts the definitions of the CSE on misconduct in research, "[...] in which the harm occurs in the setting of, or as a direct result of, research practices that do not meet ethical norms or as a direct result of irresponsible behavior of the investigator."
Examples of misconduct are falsification of data, manipulation of citations, plagiarism and redundant publication.
During the editorial process, Fórum Linguístico verifies the evidence of misconduct through a qualitative analysis of the form and content of the submission. Plagiarism checking is carried out using text similarity identification software.
Reports of suspected misconduct can be made at any time, by anyone, to the official Fórum Linguístico e-mail address. It is suggested that as much information as possible be provided so that the editorial staff can check the situation and initiate an investigation.
In case of doubts, clarifications and decision-making, the editorial team is guided by the flowcharts and guidelines of the COPE.
Errata, retractions and expressions of concern
Fórum Linguístico adopts the definitions of NLM, endorsed by CSE, for errata, retractions and expressions of concern.
In any case, the result will be reached only after the editorial team has investigated the facts and determined the actions required for resolution, guided by the COPE guidelines.

The Fórum Linguístico Journal is concerned with ensuring long-term access to its content. In case any incident occurs in the serves, the digital files of the journal are preserved in the Rede Cariniana, using the LOCKSS program.
