Abstract

Using statistical results presented by Coelho (2008) and Martins (2009) on variation and change in subject order and clitic position in XV contexts, we investigate in this study the empirical standards of the (X)VS(O) order in plays written by Brazilian playwriters born in Santa Catarina, Brazil, during the 19th and 20th centuries. Based on three periods of time, comparative analysis shows that the writing of Santa Catarina at the end of the 20th century lost the Germanic inversion and presents an increase in proclisis associated to SV constructions. The texts present, however, a very regular use of the unacusative inversion, not related to the grammatical change which is in the origin of Brazilian Portuguese.
