This article has as its main objectives to develop some reflections about the notion of style in sociolinguistics and to demonstrate how style works in the constitution and representation of social personae within certain sociolinguistic groups. Considering that style is conceived broadly as the differentiations of linguistic behavior that iconically reflect social differences (contrasts), we analyze some lexical occurrences in the book Capão Pecado, by Ferréz, in order to understand how styles, linguistic registers and dialectal lexical variation which are present in that book contribute to some extent to the formation of identity of the man who lives in the suburbs.Downloads
