The integrationist critique of orthodox linguistics

O artigo examina e contrasta duas posições teóricas na linguística: a segregacionista e a integracional. Faz uma critica ao que chama de linguística ortodoxa, examinando a posição estruturalista e a gerativa. Em sua visão, a linguística ortodoxa trata as línguas como sistemas autônomos, a partir da própria invenção da "língua", e faz a sua análise a partir de suas relações internas. Em contraste, apresenta a linguística integracionista, que se concentra nas relações externas entre as línguas, os indivíduos e as comunidades que as utilizam e reorienta, assim, a atenção sobre a construção das experiências linguísticas pelos seres humanos.
