In the first decades of the 21st century, many Brazilian higher education institutions (HEIs) have created or expanded their international offices (IOs). In line with the university autonomy, each institution can define the structure and scope of action of its IO and there is no legislation or ministerial guidelines support any given model. This article investigates the organization of the IOs of 90 Brazilian HEIs, by the means of a survey applied at the national level. Among other results, the study pointed out that, in general, the IOs have small teams and their structures are mostly linked to the office of the institutions’ top manager. Even with very limited teams and budgets, the IOs are responsible for a variety of different activities, often without specific and specialized subsectors to handle them.
