The study investigated the reasons influencing the decision of business students at public and private universities in Manaus to choose (or not) an academic career, using Self-Determination Theory (SDT) as the theoretical framework. The research adopted a mixed-methods approach, with quantitative data collected through an online questionnaire based on the Academic Motivation Scale (AMS) and qualitative data gathered through semi-structured interviews. Quantitative results revealed that extrinsic motivation (financial incentives, social prestige) outweighed intrinsic motivation (interest and pleasure in academic activities). Factors such as gender, course, type of institution, ethnicity, and socioeconomic conditions significantly influenced students' decisions. Qualitative interviews highlighted the influence of inspiring professors, research experiences, and the academic environment as motivators, while financial challenges, family pressure, and lack of institutional guidance were identified as barriers. The study concluded that, although many students show interest in an academic career, extrinsic motivation and practical challenges play a crucial role in their decisions. The study suggests the need for policies and strategies to promote academic careers, such as increased financial support and professional guidance, contributing to the strengthening of research and education in Brazil.
