This paper assumes that the opposite poles of fame and obscurity, as emerged in Gay Talese´s work, have become a paradigm for certain narrative journalism, with some influence in Brazilian contemporary reportage. Initially, we investigate the context in which this social approach was consolidated, in New Journalism, and its critical potential. Then, we analyze this paradigm in Brazilian reportages, written by the journalists Fred Melo Paiva and Christian Carvalho Cruz.  We aim at identifying and comprehending the principal aspects of our society revealed by the texts, considering this polarization. Some results show that the reportages claim for the visibility of anonymous and excluded individual in our society and criticize the ways mainstream media tell the stories of lives whether ordinary or famous.
