The criticism that builds music: the curious case of MPB

Abstract

This article presents a reflection upon the role of the music criticism on the establishment of MPB as an ‘institution’ (NAPOLITANO, 2010). The production related to the critique of music, which involved intellectuals from different areas, is understood as fundamental to the consecration of the Brazilian Popular Music as a privileged space for social and political debates. Moreover, this process of institutionalization also legitimated the aesthetical sophistication and the incorporation of elements from international music, without calling into question the “Brazilian” and “Popular” features. This communication will reconstruct the course of this critique since the 1940 decade, pointing some of its most significant characteristics.
