In an action research, we investigate how high school students, residents in peripheral or low-income neighborhoods, criticize Brazilian journalism and how they remain informed. The study reveals their distancing and distrust of traditional journalistic sources — although they recognize its importance , but also the emergence of new informative routines in these adolescent’s lives, influenced by digital platforms. According to the focus groups, the consumption of professional journalism occurs mainly on TV, due to the influence of family habits, and on news websites. On their own initiative, young people turn to posts on social networks, YouTube videos and aggregator queries to access what they identify as important “news” for everyday life, although that information does not always come from the traditional news media.
