This article proposes to map and discuss the different understandings about quality in journalism. For this, the perspectives presented in studies developed in countries on the American and European continents are considered. The research highlight aspects relevants to the contemporary debate on Brazilian journalism in a context of risks to democracy and relating methods and forms of quality verification proposed by different authors. The article is divided into two major sections, the first on North American and European studies and the second on Latin American discussions. It is a review effort on how the different approaches propose and understand the notion of quality, its limits and its possibilities of application.
