Abstract

Journalistic news is nearly always understood as an expositive text in which facts are presented in order of importance and relevance. However, news text can also fit into the category of narrative and discourse when considering broader notions of narrative in the epic sense. The present work seeks to show that news can be discourse with evaluative positions on the facts reported. Based on the sociolinguistic theory of narrative put forth by Willam Labov, the narrative of a newspaper article is analyzed. This study seeks to reaffirm that a social fact becomes a journalistic fact through the meanings offered by the evaluation.
