A proposal for analysis and definition of journalistic data comics

Abstract

This paper aims to analyze ten data comics accessible on the “Data Comics” website, in order to suggest categories of analysis that allow defining the object and identifying structural elements and data visualization. It seeks to expand the current definition of the object. We broaden the definition of this type of data visualization and offer classificatory elements that can serve for other researchers to identify a data comic. We propose to define data comic as a form of data visualization using the language of the comics, which, for this, must have, at least, one graphic element and two data identification elements (authorship and source). Of the total number of objects analyzed, according to our proposal, only two (20%) can be defined as comic data.
