This article sets out to reassess the meanings of citizenship in the history of the Brazilian republic at each historic moment. It identifies the advances and setbacks that have taken place in the construction of a full citizenship, as well as the proposals for building a deterritorialized and more cosmopolitan citizen identity – an expression of the new meaning concerning citizenship within the context of globalization. Finally some considerations are presented, and some challenges are offered to associations, social movements, organized or informal groups, and even to individuals who are moved by the aspiration and sense of responsibility of actively participating in the structure of the world today and of interfering in the worrying signs in the direction of globalization.Downloads
