Abstract

A consideration of and the potential for emancipation of the lower and working classes requires that scientists and intellectuals consider the incapacity of logical reasoning to understand and explain social phenomenon. It also requires recognizing that reality can be given a wide variety of explanations, many of which were created through processes of survival, resistance and popular struggle. Therefore, considering the commitment to scientific objectivity and the essential ethical quality that should guide the construction of scientific knowledge, the limited, disciplined and record-taking perspective, the foundation of the crises of modern science, must be analyzed through and broadened by other dimensions, subjectivities and forms of knowledge – that are popular and quotidian – and which, when confronted with scientific categories, compete for the emergence of a new form of knowledge. The epistemological substance of this new knowledge must be captured in the process of formulation of ideas and actions that compete to overcome social injustice and environmental degradation.
