The Estado Novo and its quest for new territorial and symbolic spaces

Abstract

This article presents a brief sketch of its author’s trajectory in studying the following themes related to the Estado Novo regime (1937-1945): national identity and culture and intellectuals’ engagement in the discussion of these concepts, as well as their participation within the political regime. The author also offers some observations on political and cultural relations between Brazil and the US. Finally, some commentaries on the political importance of the Brazilian territory as a physical and human space for the constitution of national identity are also provided. Lucia Lippi Oliveira, Fundação Getúlio Vargas

Possui graduação em Sociologia e Política pela Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (1966), mestrado em Ciência Política (Ciência Política e Sociologia) pela Sociedade Brasileira de Instrução - SBI/IUPERJ (1973) e doutorado em Sociologia pela Universidade de São Paulo (1986). Atualmente é pesquisadora e professora da Fundação Getúlio Vargas - RJ. Tem experiência na área de Sociologia, com ênfase em Outras Sociologias Específicas, atuando principalmente nos seguintes temas: intelectuais, identidade nacional, historiografia, pensamento social e patrimônio cultural.
