Abstract

This study is aimed at analyzing the symbolic representation of inflation during the process of formulation and implementation of the “Plano Real”. The purpose is to show that within this context inflation was associated with a disease which would be corroding the Brazilian society and that its causes would be derived from two main factors: the fiscal and monetary disarrays. These factors would have as causes the ‘economic populism’ of the Brazilian elites and the inadequacy of the national political institutions towards a good management of the economic policy. Thus, departing from the analyses of the data, it is concluded that the rhetoric which presided the representation that was made about inflation and its causes, keeps important similitude with some ‘archetypes’ and ‘grammars’ that are constituents of the political tradition of the Brazilian authoritarianism, mostly in its technocratic version.
